about

Holocaust survivor Yaacov Handali narrates his horrific experiences arriving at Auschwitz. His mother, father, two sisters & two brothers are all murdered

lyrics

The doors opened,
it was after mignight, I don't know, I didn't have a watch,
& - shouting.

The first shock you experience is that yelling in German,
terrible cries, "Raus, schnell!"
The dogs bark & the Germans, with the butts of thier rifles,
keep pushing & hitting the people getting off the train.

Then the women are separated from the men,
women in one group, men in another.

Mother, who is with my two sisters,
tries to get out of the women's line
& come to me, her son, & say something to me.
And then I see an SS man, with the butt of his rifle,
hit her on the back to make her go back in line,
and I remain with my two brothers & with father.

Then they conduct another selection.
It all happens quickly, as if on a conveyor belt.
It's something that, one can't even start imagining.

That's what happened that night,
an unforgettable night.

It's the night on which I affectively lose my whole family.
